Stable, high-quality sources

In its 20 years of development, the Viet Uc Seafood Corporation has been a pioneer in the application of scientific and technological innovation into production, making an important contribution to ensuring the supply of stable and high-quality seed sources. It also provides products for aquaculture and processing, to meet demand for the domestic market and for export.

Transforming Vietnam’s shrimp

With an aspiration of “transforming Vietnam’s shrimp”, Viet Uc Seafood has been developing important solutions to develop the local shrimp brand.

First is the seeding stage. In the shrimp industry’s value chain, the seed segment is particularly important and many enterprises focus on developing this stage because the breed is the decisive factor in over 55 per cent of a crop’s success. The group has cooperated with strategic partners such as the CSIRO Institute (Australia), Benchmark Holding JSC (UK), Can Tho University, Nha Trang University, the Agro & Forestry University in Ho Chi Minh City, and the Research Institute for Aquaculture II, and continually conducted research to create good white-leg shrimp broodstock.

Viet Uc is the first and only company in Vietnam to have its own source of white-leg shrimp broodstock. With the application of modern methods in genetic numbers and molecular genetics, to name just a few, the corporation has chosen to create the G7 generation of white-leg shrimp broodstock, with an average growth rate about 48 per cent better than the G0 generation.

This is a key factor in producing seed sources not only with high resistance but which can also adapt to the soil and climatic conditions of each locality. In 2018, for the first time in Vietnam, Viet Uc’s shrimp hatchery was officially granted a certificate for its production facility meeting standards in disease safety set by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The second is to form complexes for producing high-quality shrimp (a closed process with a combination of superior technologies applied in each segment, from broodstock, shrimp, feed, and super-intensive commercial shrimp in greenhouses to consumers’ dining tables). In particular, the super-intensive high-tech shrimp farming area in the greenhouse was built with modern technology from Israel, which is an environmentally-friendly farming model with high productivity that can be applied in many different places.

Leading in producing “tra” fish with high technology

Following the success of the application of superior technologies in the shrimp industry, Viet Uc became a pioneer in the application of high technology in the broodstock selection process. The corporation has actively applied a number of outstanding technologies, such as biotechnology, information technology, and microelectronics, which help select individuals with superior genetic material that are the best broodstock for the next generation. This technology also allows the analysis of congestion, inbreeding, origin, growth, and development of fish.

On December 14, its high-tech “tra” fish breeding zone was officially put into operation on an area of 100 ha, with expected capacity of 1 billion breeds per year. The zone is located on Vinh Hoa islet in Vinh Buong hamlet, Vinh Hoa commune, Tan Chau town, in the Mekong Delta’s An Giang province. In the initial period, the corporation selected the parents of generation G1 with superior characteristics: the fish source being completely clean, rapid growth rate (of about 20 per cent in each generation), and a survival rate increasing 15-20 per cent compared to the previous generation. The group’s “tra” fish products have good growth and development, thereby improving productivity and the quality of finished “tra” fish products.

It is expected that with the methodical work and success that Viet Uc has achieved, it will contribute to developing domestic seafood enterprises and jointly make Vietnam become a major seafood exporting country in the region and the world.
