Akamai Technologies, Inc., an intelligent edge platform for securing and delivering digital experiences, has announced it will support Vietnam Satellite Digital Television (VSTV) in delivering video content to viewers in Vietnam with the help of Akamai’s Edge Platform.

This establishes Akamai’s presence in the market and represents the company’s commitment to building new features and solutions that are increasingly suited to help enterprises thrive in an increasingly digitalized economy such as Vietnam.

“The internet has changed the way we consume TV and has been an important source for viewers to access video on demand,” said Mr. Parimal Pandya, Vice President, Media, Asia, Pacific and Japan, at Akamai Technologies. “Akamai has an established record in delivering large-scale content to viewers around the world, and we look forward to a successful partnership with VSTV to deliver a seamless, broadcast-quality experience to their local audience.”

In the past year, Akamai has seen more Vietnamese switching from traditional TV to OTT (over the top) media services for their video consumption. “This deal is very timely and we believe our Edge Platform will play a crucial role in allowing the market to enjoy the ease of watching a live game from the comfort of their mobile devices,” he said.

VSTV, which produces the four K+ channels and distributes up to 170 channels, has seen its OTT user base increase four-fold over the last three years. This comes as the company provides diverse content options for consumers, which include local and international dramas, movies, and series, as well as live global sporting events such as tennis and football.

As the main broadcaster with three-season exclusive distribution rights in Vietnam of the English Premier League, from 2019 to 2022, VSTV anticipates further growth in its audience size and for more viewers to turn to mobile devices to stream video content.

The new partnership between VSTV and Akamai will thus allow the broadcaster to leverage Akamai’s Edge Platform to distribute content across devices and on a large scale while reducing the impact of network congestion for better viewing experiences.

“Akamai has a deep understanding of OTT delivery and has demonstrated its ability to deliver content on an unprecedented scale,” said Ms. Nguyen Thu Van, Products & Services Director at VSTV. “Working with an industry leader like Akamai gives us the confidence to be able to meet our viewers’ expectations of quality and performance, especially when it comes to more popular content on our platform, such as football and tennis matches and Vietnamese movies.”

As VSTV continues to bring live sporting events such as the English Premier League to its local audience, it will be working closely with Akamai to introduce new features and innovations as well as monitor online video performance, users’ quality of experience, and audience behavior.
