Viettel has completed the integration of the first 5G network broadcasting infrastructure in the area around Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi and successfully tested broadcasts on all bands licensed by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

Connection speeds in the tests ranged from 600 - 700Mbps, equivalent to the speed offered by Verizon’s 5G network customers in the US.

Viettel’s technical team has moved to conduct technical tests including evaluation of backward compatibility (with existing 4G, 3G, and 2G devices) and evaluating optimal coverage for different speeds and services.

The biggest challenge for the group is that the 5G network has many components that need to be adjusted, from the frequency, the number of frequencies, the terminal, the coverage, and the location of the transmitter coverage area.

Once completing tests and editing, access speeds will really explode. The 5G internet speed and a service announcement program will be held by Viettel in early May.

Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Deputy General Director of the Viettel Group, said it aims to pioneer the development and deployment of the latest technologies, including 5G technology in sync with the world’s leading carriers to adapt to Vietnam’s digital transformation strategy, ready for Industry 4.0. “The 5G network development research engineers at Viettel are also in the process of researching and mastering technology and developing products of the 5G Viettel broadcasting station,” he added.

Vietnam is one of the earliest 5G test countries in the world. The time to integrate and broadcast the 5G network was just one month. Viettel’s engineers installed nearly 1 tons of equipment in just five days. Device integration and core network configuration by 5G network is still new technology for operators around the world.

Accessing and testing new technologies helps Vietnam catch up with global trends and this is very different from deploying the 4G network.

The 5G network is a new generation mobile broadband network offering higher speeds, a smoother online service experience, and stability. It is also expected to consume much less power than 4G, so the battery life of networked devices will also be longer.
