The Can Tho City People’s Committee and Vietnam Airlines signed an agreement on August 10 to build the Can Tho Airline Logistics Center near Can Tho International Airport on an area of 27 ha.

The center will improve the efficiency of transportation and trade, create diversified connections, and promote the development of logistics services in the Mekong Delta city and the surrounding region.

The People’s Committee will create favorable conditions on planning information, specialized guidance, and related procedures for Vietnam Airlines to complete investment procedures. The national flag carrier will quickly conduct research and surveys for the project’s implementation.

Vietnam Airlines has already worked with the Konoike Japan Corporation to study and evaluate the project’s feasibility.

Mr. Dao Anh Dung, Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee, said the city will provide information on industrial zones, export processing zones, commodity zones, and fisheries and agricultural products to ensure the project is deployed in the best possible manner.

Mr. Trinh Hong Quang, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, said that being assigned the task of implementing the first project in a national aviation logistics project chain affirmed the important role the carrier has in implementing the policy of the Prime Minister on boosting the development of logistics infrastructure nationwide. He also pointed out that in the context of domestic logistics growth of 15-20 per cent per year, exploiting the logistics center will bring a large revenue source for Vietnam Airlines in the years to come. “For Can Tho city, the logistics center is also a vital piece of transport infrastructure, which is essential in connecting the city and the Mekong Delta with local and overseas localities, while creating jobs and contributing positively to the community,” he added.

Demand for goods transport in Vietnam has grown sharply in recent years, especially by air. According to the Can Tho City Department of Transport, in 2017 more than 700,000 passengers and 4,000 tons of cargo passed through Can Tho International Airport.

Konoike is a multinational logistics corporation with more than 100 years of experience, with a network of branches and companies in many countries around the world. The corporation is already familiar with Vietnam’s logistics market, having co-founded the Vinakoi and Konoike Vinatrans logistics companies.
