Vietnam Airlines organized a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of direct Vietnam - Russia flights on May 23 in Moscow, with the attendance of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who is in the country on an official visit.

The national flag carrier opened its first direct flight to Russia in 2004 on Boeing 777 aircraft, the most advanced aircraft at the time, which helped passenger volumes increase more than ten-fold.

In 2018, to further enhance service quality and the flight experience, Vietnam Airlines began plying the route with the most modern wide-body aircraft, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Vietnam Airlines’ direct flights have become an important “aviation bridge”, connecting Vietnam and Russia and opening up opportunities for comprehensive economic, scientific, educational, cultural, and tourist cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Phuc told the ceremony he highly appreciates the success of Vietnam Airlines in maintaining the route for 15 years. With modern aircraft, talented pilots, good service, and absolute safety, he added, Vietnam Airlines is a prestigious airline in Vietnam and the world. “Vietnam Airlines is playing the role of ambassador in friendship cooperation, promoting images of Vietnam and its people in Russia and vice-versa,” he noted. “In 2018 alone, more than 600,000 Russians came to Vietnam, making an important contribution to trade and investment between the two countries.”

Mr. Pham Ngoc Minh, Chairman of the Board at Vietnam Airlines, affirmed that the carrier has always been proud of carrying out its mission of bridging history and facilitating the expansion and tightening of trade between Vietnam and Russia. “Through its wide network of flights as well as extensive cooperation with many airlines around the world, passengers can easily reach destinations in Asia and Europe through the gateways of Vietnam and Russia,” he said.

Vietnam Airlines also held a ceremony to transfer operations in Moscow from Domodedovo Airport to Sheremetyevo Airport, one of the most modern in Russia. The transfer allows passengers to more easily connect to Russian and European destinations via a network of flights between Vietnam Airlines and Aeroflot - Russia’s national flag carrier - and other airlines in the Skyteam alliance in the Russian market.

In moving to Sheremetyevo Airport, departure times for Vietnam Airlines’ flights will change to make them more convenient for passengers, with flights leaving Hanoi at 1.10am and from Moscow at 2.40pm (local times).

Vietnam Airlines operates three flights a week on the route, using the modern Boeing 787-9 with four-star international service quality.
