Two centers for information and communications technology (ICT) innovation and innovative startups have been opened in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.

The two centers were established by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) to meet the demand for technology application in industrial and agricultural development and other areas in the Mekong Delta during Industry 4.0, as the region is one of the country’s key economic zones.

ICT is regarded as an important foundation with a leading role in industry, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and healthcare development, to improve the competitiveness of businesses and Vietnam as a whole and to improve living standards, according to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Lam, Deputy Director of VCCI’s Can Tho branch.

The branch has shaken hands with Japan’s Brain Works Group to implement many cooperative activities in the city in fields ranging from cultural exchanges to business investment and the launch of the ICT innovation center.

The ICT innovation center aims to promote development cooperation in ICT renovation and application in Can Tho and other Mekong Delta localities, while connecting State agencies, non-government organizations, businesses, and academies of Vietnam and Japan in the field, contributing to business innovation, the development of industries, and the training of high quality human resources in the region.

Professor Yoshiyuki Kawazoe from Tohoku University, Director of the ICT innovation center, said it will gather together leading Japanese technological experts and see cooperation from 15 Japanese businesses specializing in recycling, the environment, bio-fuels, education, the Internet of Things (IoT), ICT, healthcare, building design, new materials, and food processing. The center will also partner with major scientific centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and others in emerging countries, ASEAN member countries, Japan, and the US’s Silicon Valley.

It will also promote innovative startups in innovative technologies in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta.

The innovative startup center will operate under the management of VCCI’s Can Tho branch as part of Mekong Startup Networking, established in 2016. Through startup promotion activities, the center is expected to be a venue for the exchange and creation of new ideas, particularly in techniques and technology, to build up technology startups in the future.

It will also provide exchanges with and consultations from experts for localities in adopting startup policies and will organize startup training courses. ICT and startup funds will be established from 2019, investing in and promoting technology business development projects and exhibiting new technology products.

At the opening of the two centers, Mr. Truong Quang Hoai Nam, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee, said the Mekong Delta region has recently been paid special attention by Japanese investors with investment plans projects in the city. The two centers are expected to create momentum for development cooperation in technology and the birth of new businesses, turning Can Tho turned into a hub of economics, education, and science and technology in the Mekong Delta region and contributing to Vietnam’s economic development.
