Sweden’s food processing and packaging solutions provider Tetra Pak has been named among the Top 10 sustainable companies in Vietnam’s manufacturing sector, in recognition of its efforts in driving sustainability in Vietnam during 2019.

The prestigious award is part of an annual program on benchmarking and announcing sustainable companies in Vietnam, co-organized by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor since 2016.

Sustainability is an integral part of Tetra Pak’s business in Vietnam. As a flagship company in the industry, it sees its responsibility as driving the industry to meet the strictest environmental standards. The company’s approach to sustainability focuses on three key pillars: Producing recyclable bio-based carton packages from sustainable resources; Delivering environmentally-friendly processing equipment and solutions; and Accelerating the recycling of cartons through close partnerships with businesses, government, and local social organizations.

The company’s newly-opened manufacturing hub in southern Binh Duong province is among Vietnam’s first factories to apply the latest, most-demanding environmental standards set by the globally-recognized LEED certification, which enables a reduction of up to 36 per cent of energy, with over 21 million liters of water reused each year. Nearly 100 per cent of its carton packages are made from FSC-certified cartons.

The past 12 years has also seen Tetra Pak’s close cooperation with partners to develop initiatives to collect and recycle used cartons in Vietnam. It plans to expand the School Recycling carton packaging collection campaign to more than 1,400 kindergartens and primary schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The program is expected to instill a habit of categorizing used cartons among both students and the public.

The company is also actively engaged with community organizations to establish and expand a chain of public drop-off stations so that consumers can bring their used cartons for collecting and recycling. Tetra Pak currently has a network of nearly 30 such stations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Tetra Pak is also cooperating with Lotte Mart and NHC to launch the Carton House campaign at Lotte Marts in Saigon South in Ho Chi Minh City. Carton houses are made from recycled cartons and serve as a destination for consumers to bring used cartons for collecting and recycling.

Under its driving ambition that all packaging materials put into the market by Tetra Pak will be collected for recycling by 2030, the company aligned with eleven other leading food and beverage and packaging businesses to establish Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO) to promote package collecting and recycling in the country.
