Chinese telecoms giant Huawei will increase its investment to $2 million in Vietnam, primarily for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, in the 2017-2019 period, Chairwoman Sun Yafang said during a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi last week.

Earlier, Mr. David Sun, President and CEO of Huawei, Southeast Asia Region, announced the group would invest $1 million into Vietnam’s ICT industry during the period.

The package includes four major programs: organizing training on new technologies, a telecommunications seed scholarship program to help develop local ICT talent and promote ICT knowledge transfer, annual contests for Vietnamese students on mobile app creation, and social sponsorship, including financing computers and equipment for schools in remote areas.

At the meeting with the PM, Ms. Yafang said that Huawei is a global ICT solutions provider and recorded turnover in 2016 of $75 billion. It now invests more than 10 per cent of its total turnover into research and development (R&D), equal to $9.2 billion in 2015. It has 180,000 employees around the world and partners with 170 countries and regions, serving one-third of the global population.

It wishes to continue contributing more to Vietnam’s ICT industry, she said, sharing experience on the development of ICT and ensuring information safety for its products and solutions in the country.

Ms. Yafang was ranked ninth on a list of the 50 most powerful businesswomen in Asia in 2015 and 38th on a list of the 50 most influential women in the world in September 2016, by Fortune magazine.

Huawei entered Vietnam in 1998 and in 2008 officially established the Huawei Technologies (Vietnam) Co., with a head office in Hanoi, a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, and a technology center in Da Nang.
