The First International Conference on Economics, Development and Sustainability 2019 (EDESUS 2019), with a main theme of global change and sustainable development for emerging economies in Asia, was held by the Vietnam National University (VNU) and Springer Publishing House on November 16 in Hanoi.

Associate Professor and Dr. Nguyen Truc Le, Dean of the University of Economics and Business (UEB) at VNU, said the transformation of the global economy is being driven by the rise of emerging economies. “Emerging economies will play an important role in the development of many multinational companies in the future, and sustainable development in the context of the transformation of the global economy in emerging Asian economies is attracting the attention of international scholars, including in Vietnam,” he said. “The rapid economic growth of emerging economies, however, contributes significantly to environmental pollution and climate change, challenging the sustainability of nations, especially in Asia.”

Mr. Luc Hens, Editor-in-Chief of Springer, said the conference is being held at a time when countries need appropriate policies to deal with sustainable development and the environment.

Speakers discussed development policies, sustainable science, policies and laws related to sustainable development, green growth, challenges related to sustainable development, and integrated methods for development, sustainable development education, and sustainable tourism.

The conference connected students, doctoral students, lecturers, and scientists at VNU with foreign scientists and partners. The Second International Conference will be held in 2020, with the theme “Sustainability of the Greater Mekong Subregion”.

It plays an important role in affirming the position of VNU's UEB, which is the leading research center in Vietnam and a prestigious destination of world knowledge.

UEB and VNU also held the Young Scholars Initiative Asia Convening 2019 (YSI Asia Convening 2019), offering a chance for young economists in research fields to meet, share ideas, and inspire academic work related to the social challenges of the 21st century. This is the first time YSI Regional Convening has been held in Asia. Throughout the four-day event, young scholars presented papers on numerous subject areas, including cooperation, development, regional issues, economic history, law and economics, gender inequality, sustainability, urban economics, and the history of economic thought, among others.
