Train passengers are now able to book and pay for their tickets using a mobile app called MoMo.

The state-owned Vietnam Railways (VNR) is collaborating with MoMo, an e-wallet start-up, to launch a new e-service that allows mobile phone users to purchase train tickets online through a mobile phone application.

To use the service, passengers need to install the app MoMo on their mobile devices, which is available on both iOS and Android systems. Then they enter what kind of ticket they would like to purchase. After that, identification information is entered to begin the payment process. In order to pay, money needs to be transferred to one of the 14 banks partnered with MoMo. It takes 2-5 minutes to complete the process, which helps passengers save a lot of time as they don’t have to go to the train station to buy tickets like before.

For the launch of the service, from May 7 to August 7 VNR and MoMo are offering passengers a promotion of up to VND 500,000 ($22). For example, customers who have never used MoMo with their bank account can enter the code “muavetauhoa” to get a discount of 50 per cent off their train ticket (up to VND 200,000 or $8) for all routes, seats and departure times. In addition, all customers who buy train tickets will also receive a 15 per cent discount voucher (up to VND 300,000 or $13) for hotel bookings made via the MoMo application. More than 8,000 hotels in Vietnam accept MoMo payments.

Mr Vu Anh Minh, Chairman of VNR's Board of Directors, said that the new service aims to provide more convenience to passengers as part of VNR’s efforts to improve the service quality of the railway. Recently, VNR has added new train cars and shorter routes and is offering free airline-standard meals to attract more customers.

The Online Mobile Service Joint Stock Company (M_Service), the owner of MoMo, is a financial technology (fintech) company that was established in 2007. It primarily operates in the field of mobile payments with the MoMo brand.
