Vietnam Airlines officially announced two new routes, Bangkok - Da Nang and Phuket - Ho Chi Minh City, on November 2, in the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc within the framework of the 35th ASEAN Summit, taking place in Bangkok from November 2 to 4. Flights began on October 27.

The Phuket - Ho Chi Minh City route operates with a frequency of three flights a week. Flights depart Ho Chi Minh City at 3.50 pm and from Phuket at 6.40pm on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. The Bangkok - Da Nang route is daily, departing from Da Nang at 3.20pm and Bangkok at 6pm.

Along with regular Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City - Bangkok routes, Vietnam Airlines’ total flights between Vietnam and Thailand is now 52 a week.

Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh appreciated the efficiency of Vietnam Airlines in the Thai market for over 40 years, becoming an important bridge connecting the strategic cooperation relationship between the two countries, in economics, politics, trade, investment, and other fields, and contributing to promoting cultural relations and tourism. “I believe that with the potential and the rapid growth in trade and tourism demand between the two countries as well as the cooperation relations between Vietnam and Thailand, new routes will continue to make important achievements and contribute to Vietnam Airlines’ increasing business efficiency,” he added.

Mr. Le Hong Ha, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, said that with the potential and open opportunities in the Thai market, Vietnam Airlines will continue to develop on routes connecting the two countries. “This will be an important step for Vietnam Airlines to improve its flight network, ensuring the mission, role, and responsibility of a national flag carrier, especially with Vietnam hosting ASEAN 2020,” he said.

With average growth of over 15 per cent in the 2015-2018 period, Thailand is one of the largest and most stable aviation markets of Vietnam Airlines. In 2018, total market capacity reached more than 3.5 million passengers, an increase of nearly 13 per cent over 2017. From the beginning of 2019 to now, Vietnam-Thailand routes of Vietnam Airlines have ferried more than 700,000 passengers, an increase of 6 per cent compared to total passengers in 2018.

Vietnam Airlines has been certified as a four-star airline for the fourth consecutive year, having successfully met the rigorous rating criteria of Skytrax. Areas rated 4.5 or 5 stars increased by 16 per cent against 2016, when it first received four-star certification. Meeting 85 per cent of the four- and five-star criteria is a stepping stone for the carrier to become Vietnam’s first five-star airline after 2020.
