The first calibration flight took off and landed on July 11 at Van Don International Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh, the first private airport in Vietnam.

Invested by the Sun Group to the tune of VND7.7 trillion ($333 million), construction began in March 2016 and it is expected to go into full operations in December, serving both civil and military flights with a 3.6 km-long runway.

Located in Van Don district, the airport covers 288 ha and is the first in Vietnam to operate under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) form.

With nine air routes to come and capable of serving around 7,000 passengers each day, it is expected to have an annual capacity of 2-2.5 million passengers by 2020, which will increase to 5 million by 2030.

The airport features support facilities, a two-module terminal, and other functional areas. A cargo terminal is expected to be built by 2030 with a capacity of at least 51,000 tonnes.

When operating in December, the airport will facilitate travel to Quang Ninh, home of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay.

It is also expected to provide thousands of jobs for local people.

Quang Ninh welcomed 9.8 million visitors last year, including 4.3 million foreigners, up 18 and 23 per cent year-on-year, respectively. Host of the National Tourism Year 2018, the province targets some 12 million visitors, including 5 million international tourists, earning VND22 trillion ($968 million) in revenue.
