A festival of Rhododendrons, a typical flower of Sapa, is being organized during April and until May 21 in preparation for the opening on April 28 of the Sapa Summer Festival and the official launch of the Lao Cai Tourist Information Portal.

An official information channel on provincial tourism, the portal aims to introduce the unique culture of the ethnic minority people in Sapa to local and international tourists.

During the Festival, Visitors can experience the Sapa Love Market, a cultural feature of Sapa involving dating by Mong people and love songs of the Red Dao people.

There will also be a street festival with performances of ethnic groups’ folk art, the wedding ceremony of the Dao people, a welcome ceremony to celebrate the New Year of the Tay people, and a ceremony worshiping the New Year of the Giay people.

Other highlights include a Cloud Festival at the Ham Rong eco-tourism area on Ham Rong Mountain, with presentations of local art, competitions in traditional ethnic sports, demonstrations of culinary culture with the theme “Highland Market”, a photo exhibition of Sapa among white clouds and climbing up Ham Rong, and the Cat Cat Village Festival, featuring folk games, traditional Mong handicrafts (silver carving, weaving, indigo dyeing, and drawings), and cuisine.

The Festival of Exploring the Ethnic Culture of Ta Phin Commune includes an announcement of a national cultural heritage certificate for Ta Phin Cave and national cultural heritage recognition of traditional silver handicraft carving by the Red Dao people, a showcase of production activities by farmers and cultural activities at Ta Phin cultural market, picking herbal leaves by the Red Dao for bathing medications, preparation of their traditional meals, and the craft of embroidery.

The Cultural Tourism Festival of Tam Duong District will be organized for the first time, introducing the culture, people, tourism sites, food, arts, and folk games of Tam Duong district in the neighboring province of Lai Chau.

Within the framework of the Festival, there is also a photo exhibition entitled “Soil and Sapa”, showing special photos of Sapa by professional and amateur photographers, a display of flowers and plants of Sapa, a cultural space exhibiting agricultural and embroidery products and food of five ethnic groups: Mong, Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho, and an open tennis tournament.
