Vietnam’s men’s U/23 football team may have lost 2-1 to Uzbekistan in the final of the U/23 Asia Cup on January 27 in China but they truly won the hearts of all Vietnamese in being the only Southeast Asian team to progress to the tournament’s final.

Thousands of Vietnamese fans traveled to China to watch the match, while back home the national stadium in Hanoi was open for fans to show their support for the team and their incredible success in the tournament.

A sea of people lined the streets from Noi Bai International Airport to the center of the capital to welcome the team home.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with players and staff at the Office of the Government in the evening.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Minister and Chairman of the Office Government Mai Tien Dung, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, and Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs Do Van Chien also attended the meeting.

The Prime Minister told the meeting he waited more than five hours but it was worth it, as the success of the team gave great joy to the whole country. “This was the first time a Vietnamese football team has advanced so far,” he said.

On behalf of Party and State leaders, he presented First Class Labor Medals to the team and Third Class Labor Medals to manager Mr. Park Hang-seo, goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung, and midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai.

Vietnam began the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to South Korea then beat Australia 1-0 before ending the group stages with a 0-0 draw against Syria, which proved enough to move out of the group.

The team continued their excellent form in the quarter-final against Iraq, winning 5-3 on penalties and progressing to the semi-final, where it beat Qatar in a penalty shootout.
