Philippine Airlines (PAL) has opened direct flights between Hanoi and Manila.

The new flights will promote tourism between Vietnam and the Philippines and strengthen connectivity and understanding, according to H.E. Ly Quoc Tuan, Ambassador of Vietnam to the Philippines. It will also facilitate Vietnamese travel to the US and Canada via Manila.

Using the 156-seat Airbus A320, the new route operates four times a week. Flights take off from Hanoi on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1.45am and land in Manila at 5.30am. The flight from Manila leaves every Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 10.25pm and reaches Hanoi at 12.45am (all local times). Travel time is about three hours.

The number of Filipino tourists to Vietnam increased some 13 per cent in 2018 compared to 2017, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism. In the first quarter of this year it was up 20 per cent against the same period last year.

Before PAL, there was one direct air route between Hanoi and Manila, served by Cebu Pacific, another Filipino airline.

PAL currently operates eight flights a week on the Manila - Ho Chi Minh City route.

Founded in 1941 and the first and oldest commercial airline in Asia, PAL serves 33 destinations in the Philippines and 43 overseas destinations in Southeast Asia, East Asia, Middle East, Oceania, North America and Europe.

It recently won the Most Improved Airline for 2019 award, from the Australia-based airline review firm AirlineRatings.com. London-based international airline rating firm Skytrax also gave PAL the second Most Improved Airline for 2018 Award last July, based on worldwide passenger surveys.

In February it was certified as a Four Star global airline by Skytrax after excelling in rigorous independent audits of inflight and ground services and products. It also received the Four Star Major Regional Airline 2019 award from New-York based Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), again based on a comprehensive verified passenger voting system.
