International visitors in June the lowest this year

June figures down as first-half growth increases overall.

According to the General Statistics Office, in the first half of 2019 the number of international visitors to Vietnam stood at nearly 8.5 million people, up 7.5 per cent over the same period last year. Visitors by road increased 24.9 per cent, to 1.6 million, followed by air, up 4.5 per cent to over 6.6 million people.

The number of international visitors to Vietnam in June was the lowest since the beginning of the year and increased only 0.2 per cent compared to June last year. Visitors from Asia accounted for the majority, but were down 0.4 per cent year-on-year, and visitors from Australia fell 6 per cent, while those from Europe increased 2.3 per cent, from the Americas 7.4 per cent, and from Africa 6.9 per cent. Passenger growth in the first half was much lower than during the 2016-2018 period.

June also saw growth in tourism in provinces such as Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Ninh, and Hai Phong, showing that these are tourist destinations favored by both domestic and international visitors.

Revenue from accommodation and catering services in the first half was estimated at VND286.7 trillion ($12.3 million), an increase of 9.8 per cent compared to the same period last year, of which Binh Dinh’s figure increased 18.4 per cent, Phu Yen 17.9 per cent, Quang Ninh 16.6 per cent, Hai Phong 15.9 per cent, Nghe An 14.7 per cent, Hanoi 11 per cent, and Ho Chi Minh City 9.6 per cent.

In terms of transport services, passenger numbers reached nearly 2.5 million in the first half, an increase of 10.7 per cent year-on-year, in which those traveling by road and air saw the highest growth. Passengers arriving by reached 2.359 million, an increase of 10.9 per cent, and by air 26.7 million, up 8.3 per cent.
