Vietnam’s tourism sector set a new record in welcoming 16.3 million international visitors in the first eleven months of 2019, an increase of 15.4 per cent over the same period last year.

According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam’s tourism sector welcomed more than 1.8 million international visitors in November, up 11.8 per cent against October and 39 per cent year-on-year. The 16.3 million visitors in the first eleven months is the highest figure ever.

Arrivals by air reached 13 million, accounting for nearly 80 per cent, up over 14 per cent year-on-year; arrivals by road reached 3 million, up over 21 per cent; and by sea increased nearly 14 per cent. Total tourism revenue in the first eleven months was estimated at VND649 trillion ($27.9 million), up 16.3 per cent.

International visitors from Asian markets still accounted for the majority, with nearly 13 million, up more than 18 per cent over the same period last year. Visitors from Europe reached nearly 2 million, up 6.3 per cent. Visitors from the Americas reached nearly 900,000, up 7.4 per cent, mostly from the US. Visitors from Oceania reached nearly 400,000, down 1 per cent. And visitors from Africa reached nearly 43,000 arrivals, up more than 12 per cent.

Vietnam’s tourism industry aims to welcome 17.5 to 18 million international visitors in 2019 and cater to 85 million domestic tourists, with total revenue estimated at VND700 trillion ($30.1 million).

According to travel agencies, this is still the peak time for international visitors to Vietnam. Therefore, the tourism administration believes that the 2019 target will be achieved. In 2018, the number of international visitors to the country was 15.5 million people.

In the first eleven months, the number of domestic visitors was 78.5 million people, reaching 92.3 per cent of the annual plan. Tour operators said the end of the year is also when they offer packages for domestic tourists, such as visits to the Da Lat Flower Festival, among others.
