The Hoa Phuong Do (Red Flamboyant) Festival 2017 is taking place in the northern port city of Hai Phong on May 13 and 14, with the theme “Hai Phong Reaching Out to the Sea”.

Activities will be held in the downtown area and the centers of several districts. The main event, the Gala Night, will be held at 8pm on May 13 at the Hai Phong Opera House Square, coinciding with the 62nd anniversary of the liberation of Hai Phong (May 13, 1955).

Some 60 other events are also scheduled, such as the Hai Phong Tourism Festival, exhibitions on Vietnam Artworks 2017 and May Colors Paintings, and books and pictures on Hai Phong’s integration and development, as well as a carnival, traditional artistic performances, street music, and sporting events.

The Hai Phong Department of Culture and Sports is also in charge of organizing activities in the two tourism areas of Do Son Beach and Cat Ba Island.

The annual event is held to introduce domestic and foreign tourists to Hai Phong - a land of heroism in Vietnam’s history and a port city with a distinctive culture and a well-known symbol that has become familiar with friends all over the world - the red flamboyant (a type of tree found in the city).

The festival is also expected to create an exciting atmosphere and improve the quality of cultural life for local people. It is also an opportunity for visitors, businesses, and investors to learn more about the favorable location for business development and the friendly investment environment of the port city, especially in tourism development.

Named after the symbol of Hai Phong - the red flamboyant tree grown around the city - the annual event was first held in 2012 as a new tourism highlight of the city, to promote its culture and tourism and attract investment for its socioeconomic development.
