The 8th Tourism Promotion Organisation for Asia Pacific Cities (TPO) Forum will take place for the first time in Vietnam from June 20 to 24 in Ho Chi Minh City.

The biennial forum, with the theme “Smart Tourism” this year, will share experiences and discuss new ideas and strategies for smart tourism development amid Industry 4.0.

This forum is a venue for TPO members to stay abreast of global trends in applying technologies and communication not only in promotion but also in management in the tourism industry, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism.

Some 130 delegates will attend the forum, including leading professors and local experts from TPO member countries, who will brief those in attendance on smart tourism models and lessons learned from cities that have been successful in applying smart tourism. As host, Ho Chi Minh City will also have the chance to promote Vietnam’s tourism industry and strengthen cooperation with other member cities of TPO.

The forum will include two sessions, entitled “Smart Tourism” and “Case Study Presentation by Member Cities on Smart Tourism”. Presentations will be given by the member cities with respect to their experiences in pursuing smart tourism, their projects and programs for promoting the smart tourism industry, the introduction of diverse smart tourism services, their cooperation with the private sector, and related problems and countermeasures.

Other programs include a trade meeting entitled “TPO Travel Trade”, an expo on smart tourism, the 31st TPO Executive Committee Meeting, bilateral meetings among TPO city members, the TPO Best Award honoring major contributions by TPO members in 2017, and visits to Ho Chi Minh City’s tourist attractions.

The TPO Bilateral Meeting will feature discussions on orientations in the operation of TPO in the time to come and ways to enhance cooperation in developing tourism among TPO members. At the TPO Travel Trade meeting, the department will focus on introducing startups in the travel sector, particularly those in technological partnerships with overseas companies, such as startups launching apps, using visual reality technologies to support tourists to explore museums and historic sites in the city, or hotel management apps and online travel websites.

The events will provide a chance for member cities to promote their tourism brand and resources through one-on-one consultations with major travel agencies and tourism-related institutions in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest tourist city in Vietnam, and tourism-related companies from member cities.

Established in 2002, the TPO Forum discusses topical issues in the tourism industry and shares knowledge and experience among working-level officials of member cities. The first TPO Forum was held in Busan, South Korea, in May 2004. It has 86 member cities and 45 industry members from ten countries and territories, including China, Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam.
