The War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City found a place on a list of the world’s Top 10 museums announced recently by TripAdvisor, the world’s most popular travel guide and review website, based on the quality and number of traveler reviews and ratings published over the last 12 months.

First opened in 1975 as the Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes, the War Remnants Museum at 28 Vo Van Tan Street in District 3 is a must-see for anyone who wants to know about Vietnam’s history.

The museum comprises a series of themed rooms in several buildings, with period military equipment placed within a walled yard, such as helicopters, fighters, bombers, and tanks. A number of pieces of unexploded ordnance are stored in a corner of the yard, with their charges and/or fuses removed.

It also has over 20,000 artifacts, images and documents with short texts in English, Vietnamese and Japanese that relive the atrocities, including war crimes perpetrated by colonial and imperial forces, the suffering of millions of Vietnamese to this day from the consequences from Agent Orange and other chemical defoliants, the use of napalm and phosphorus bombs, and atrocities such as the My Lai massacre.

The War Remnants Museum is currently one of the most popular museums in Vietnam, attracting approximately half a million visitors every year, about two-thirds of whom are foreigners, according to the museum.

TripAdvisor also recommended Cu Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City as another interesting relic from the war to explore together with the museum.

Other museums on the list include the Musee d’Orsay and Louvre Museum in Paris; the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the National WWII Museum in New Orleans; the British Museum in London; the Prado National Museum in Madrid; the Acropolis Museum in Athens; and the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.

In the regional rankings of TripAdvisor, the War Remnants Museum also topped the list, ahead of the Palace Museum in China’s Forbidden City and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Japan.

The Vietnamese Women’s Museum and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi and the Robert Taylor Museum of Worldwide Arms in the southern province of Vung Tau made it on to the Top 25 in Asia list.
