A new flower observation tower has opened at Sa Dec flower village in the Mekong Delta’s Dong Thap province, for visitors to better admire nature’s beauty.

The tower was built by local resident Tran Huu Tai in Tan Quy Dong ward, Sa De city, with investment of VND1.5 billion ($65,200). The 18-meter tower can accommodate some 30 people at a time.

Visitors can see over the village and about 20 km into the distance on a clear day, and binoculars are also available to admire the flower village.

Hundreds of visitors came on the opening day, looking out over the flowers and taking photos.

The tower is open from 6am to 9pm every day. Tickets are VND20,000 ($0.8) for 20 minutes.

Around 150 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, Sa Dec flower village is considered the flower kingdom of the Mekong Delta and is the largest supplier of flowers for southern provinces. It’s especially a must-see destination in the Mekong Delta during Tet (the Lunar New Year).

The village has become ever more beautiful in its 100 years. One typical feature, differing from other flower villages, is that Sa Dec villagers grow flowers all year round on shelves in water. Hundreds of species are grown on a high truss sitting in water coming from the canal. Villagers must therefore go out in boats to check on and harvest the flowers.

The land is full of color and the aroma of flowers and plants all year round, such as dahlia, hydrangeas, orchids, areca, wrightia religiosa, Hibiskus rosa-sinensis and African marigold. The village also boasts several varieties of roses in red, violet, pink, white, and orange.

Sa Dec city has signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate with the Dutch city of Emmen, also famed for its flowers, on high-tech agricultural development.
