A total of 15 short video clips about Hanoi are being broadcast on CNN this year, according to the Hanoi Department of Tourism.

The clips include five episodes of “The Keepers”, five episodes of “Iconic Hanoi”, three episodes of “60 Second Vacation”, one episode of “5 Reasons to Love Vietnam”, and one episode of “Sporting Moments Vietnam”.

The short clips will be broadcast a total of 60 times from July 15 to October 21 on television and digital platforms as well as CNN’s social media and targeting the Asia Pacific, Europe, South Asia, and North America.

They present diverse views and experiences in different areas the CNN production crew found in Hanoi.

The program is the realization of an MoU signed by the Hanoi People’s Committee and CNN in May on promoting Vietnam’s capital in the 2019-2024 period, with different themes each year and with total investment of $1 million. In subsequent years the clips will include the Formula 1 race scheduled for April 2020 and SEA Games 2021, in which Vietnam is host.

Hanoi also spent $1 million on promoting its beauty and tourism on CNN in 2017 and 2018, both of which improved awareness about the capital. A survey conducted by UK research firm BDRC Continental found that 86 per cent and 92 per cent of respondent viewers in 2017 and 2018, respectively, said the ads on CNN sparked their interest in traveling to Hanoi, as the capital has a lot to discover in terms of food, shopping, culture, and historical sites.

2018 was a successful year for the city’s tourism sector, with a record high 26.04 million visitors, including 5.74 million foreigners, up 9.3 and 16 per cent against 2017.

Hanoi then welcomed a record 16.75 million tourists in the first seven months of this year, up 9.2 per cent year-on-year. Of these, foreign arrivals totaled 3.7 million, an 8.9 per cent increase. The robust growth in arrivals helped expand tourism revenues by 28.8 per cent year-on-year to VND57.7 trillion ($2.48 billion); the highest in four years according to the Department of Tourism.
