Staff at United Overseas Bank (UOB) Vietnam were up bright and early on the morning of July 8 to take part in the first UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event is the main fundraising and volunteering activity in the UOB Heartbeat corporate social responsibility program. Through a series of partnerships, philanthropic efforts and other initiatives, the UOB Heartbeat program demonstrates the bank’s long-term commitment to helping enrich lives by focusing on arts, children and education. The UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk was held simultaneously on July 9 in the bank’s key markets in Asia: China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. More than $900,000 was raised in total to support local charities.

More than 400 UOB Vietnam staff and their families participated in either a 3-km walk or a 3-km run, which was followed by a family carnival. Held at the Phu My Hung urban area in District 7, it raised more than VND200 million ($8,679) for the Tien Giang Union of Friendship Organizations and the Saigon Children’s Charity CIO. Funds will go towards various programs to help under-privileged children aged from 12 to 17.

“At UOB, giving back to the community is very close to the hearts of our people,” said Mr. Wee Ee Cheong, Deputy Chairman and CEO of the UOB Group. “The UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk is one of the ways in which we unite as a bank across our key markets and do our part in helping improve the lives of children and young people, especially those in need. We are happy that for the first time our staff in Vietnam were able to join us in this program.”

Participants were treated to a fun-filled family carnival at the finishing line, which included activities such as face painting, sand art and balloon sculpting for children and the young-at-heart. A flash mob dance also kept those in attendance entertained.

UOB first launched the UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk in Singapore in 2007 and subsequently expanded it across Asia, to Malaysia in 2008, Indonesia and Thailand in 2011, China in 2012, and Hong Kong in 2014.

UOB is a leading bank in Asia with a global network of more than 500 offices in 19 countries and territories in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. Since its incorporation in 1935, it has grown organically and through a series of strategic acquisitions. In Asia, UOB operates through a head office in Singapore and banking subsidiaries in China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, as well as branches and representative offices.
